¡Artículo! La versión española de Orgullo y Prejuicio (1966)

Hace algún tiempo, escribí un artículo para la JASNA, hablando de Jane Austen en el mundo de habla española. Fue algo que hice con mucho amor y eso me dio más felicidad que había podido imaginar. Puede leer el artículo completo aquí:

De todos modos, quiero destacar algo sobre ese artículo aquí. Tal vez, Orgullo y Prejuicio no era la primera novela de Jane Austen publicada en español, fue Persuasión, pero fue la primera adaptación española pudimos ver en nuestros televisores.

Esto sucedió en los primeros tiempos de nuestra televisión pública (TVE), cuando todas las noches una novela clásica se adaptaba. Así Orgullo y -Prejuicio comenzó a emitirse del 25 de abril hasta el 6 de mayo de 1966. La trama, una adaptación de José Méndez Herrera, ganador de un Premio Nacional de Traducción en 1962 por la traducción de las obras de Shakespeare (ACETT), se mantuvo cerca de la novela. Fue dirigida por Alberto González Vergel. Lo que se cambiaron fueron los nombres de las chicas: Jane se convirtió en Jenny, Lydia era Lina, y Caroline se convirtió en Carol. Los nombres fueron cambiados para que el público pudiera entender los nombres británicos y porque estaban de moda en la España de 1960. Por otra parte, el estilo de la adaptación de la ropa y el paisaje estaba más cerca de 1840.

Y os preguntaréis ¿qué pasó con esta adaptación? Al igual que con otras series antiguas de blanco y negro de otros lugares de todo el mundo, las cintas que fueron usadas, por desgracia, se reutilizaron ... así que están perdidas para siempre. Eso es todo lo que sabemos acerca de este adaptación, pero aún nos queda la esperanza de las otras adaptaciones de Austen hechas por TVE (Emma, Persuasión o la primera versión de Northanger Abbey, de 1968) se digitalizarán y serán compartidas con todo el público .

Some time ago, I wrote an article for the JASNA, talking about Jane Austen in the Spanish speaking world. It was something that I did with lot of love and that gave me more happiness than I could thought. You can read the complete article here:

Anyway, I want to highlight something about that article. Maybe, Pride and Prejudice was not the first novel by Jane Austen published in Spanish, it was Persuasion, but it was the first Spanish adaptation we could see in our televisions.

This happened in the early times of our broadcasting television (TVE), when every night a classic novel was adapted. So Pride and Prejudice started to be shown on 25th April till 6th May of 1966. The plot, an adaptation by José Méndez Herrera, winner of a National Translation Prize in 1962 for translating the works of Shakespeare (ACETT), was kept close the novel. It was directed by Alberto González Vergel. What was changed were the names of the girls:  Jane became Jenny, Lydia was Lina, and Caroline became Carol. The names were changed so the audience could understand British names and because fashionable in 1960s Spain. On the other hand, the adaptation's style of clothing and scenery was closer to 1840s.

And you'll wonder what happened to this adaptation? As with other old, black and white series from other places all over the world, the tapes which were uses, were unfortunately, re-used...so they are lost forever. That is all we know about this adapation, but we still have hope about the other Austen adaptations made by TVE (Emma, Persuasion or the first Northanger Abbey, from 1968) will be put into the digital era and can be shared to all the audience.

Cuando emitieron O&P en TVE 1980/When P&P was broadcasted in Spanish Public Broadcasting (TVE)

Acabo de encontrar una preciosa entrada a la que me gustaría remitiros, pues tiene la portada del TP (teleprograma) de aquella semana de Mayo de 1980 en la que emitieron Orgullo y Prejuicio en RTVE, con David Rintoul y Elizabeth Garvie de protagonistas. Sin desmerecer en absoluto a otras versiones, es notorio que es mi favorita. Para las que no la habéis visto o la habéis disfrutado, quizás no tenga mucho impacto.

Pero para las que quedamos noqueadas (recuerdo nítidamente el impacto que me produjo) por esta versión, en aquel preludio del verano de 1980, traerá muchos recuerdos… aquella versión, es la que hizo posible éste y tantos otros blogs sobre Jane Austen….

I just found a beautiful entry to which I would refer you, as it has the cover of TP (Teleprograma) for the week of May 1980 in which Pride and Prejudice was broadcasted by RTVE, with David Rintoul and Elizabeth Garvie. Without detracting in any way to other versions, it is clear that it is my favorite. For those who have not seen it or have enjoyed it, maybe you don't find it imporant.

But for those who were knocked out (I remember clearly the impact that it gave me) for this version, in that summer of 1980, it will bring many memories ... that version is the one that made ​​it possible for this and many other blogs about Jane Austen ....

Ya podéis ver aquí el programa emitido en España hace un par de horas. Realmente precioso y bonito, con algún pero (fidelidad en Más fuerte que el Orgullo, ¿en serio?) y sólo queremos ir a Inglaterra tras verlo, y por supuesto fundar la Spanish Jane Austen Society. Y por pedir, que TVE nos rescate las versiones de Northanger Abbey (1968), Emma (1967) y Persuasión (1972) de sus archivos :)

You can see here the TVE show broadcasted in Spain for a couple of hours. Really lovely and pretty, with some "but" (fidelity Olivier's Pride and Prejudice, really?) And we just want to go to England after seeing it, and of course to organize the Spanish Jane Austen Society. And we ask TVE to rescue their versions of Northanger Abbey (1968), Emma (1967) and Persuasion (1972) of your files :)

Especial Jane Austen en TVE / Austen Special TV Show in TVE

As we told you, Pagina 2, a books show in Spanish public broadcasting channel is showing a special event focused in Jane Austen next Sunday at 9 o'clock. In case you could miss it or you live in another country, TVE Internacional airs it again and you'll be able to see it online too in RTVE.es

They'll visit Chatsworth, Bath and they will interview Claire Tomalin among others.

Como hemos dicho, Pagina 2, un programa sobre libros que emite el canal e televisión pública española TVE, tiene evento especial centrado en Jane Austen el próximo domingo a las 9 en punto. En caso de que lo pudieras perder o vivas en otro país, TVE Internacional lo emite de nuevo y también puedes verlo en línea en RTVE.es

Van a visitar Chatsworth, Bath y entrevistarán a Claire Tomalin, entre otros.

Gracias y Orgullo y Prejuicio en/Thanks andPride and Prejudice in TVE

Antes de nada, queremos agradeceros a todos vosotros chicos y chicas, porque ayer fue un día muy exitoso. Celebramos esos 200 años y creo, que lo hicimos genial en twitter, los foros, facebook, blogs y más. Durante los próximos días, postearemos las principales noticias del evento, especialmente en inglés y español. Y desde luego, ¡seguiremos celebrándolo todo el 2013!


La primera noticia, es un video en español, de TVE, el servicio público de radiotelevisión. Queremos añadir, que debido al hecho, de que Austen era prácticamente desconocida por los hispanohablantes hasta los años 90, esta gran celebración en los medios españoles ha sido totalmente inesperada, ¡pero bienvenida de corazón!

First of all, we want to thank you all of you guys, because yesterday was a very succesful day. We celebrated those 200 years and I think, we all rocked it in twitter, the forums, facebooks, blogs and more. During the following days, we will post the main news about the event, especially in English and Spanish. And of course, we will keep celebrating the whole 2013!

The first one, is a video in Spanish, from TVE, the Spanish publich broadcasting service. We want to add, that due to the fact, that Austen was almost unknown for the Spanish speaking people till the 90s, this big celebration in the Spanish media has been unexpected, but heartly welcomed!
